What is Gum Osseous Surgery?
Gum disease is incredibly common and it can get worse if it is left untreated. For advanced periodontal disease, we may recommend a procedure known as osseous surgery. With osseous surgery, the diseased and infected tissue is removed and a deep cleaning performed at the same time. While there is no cure for periodontal disease, osseous surgery can help to prevent instances of both tooth and bone loss as well as severe infections.
Why would Gum Osseous Surgery be needed?
The reason you might need osseous surgery is because you have advanced gum disease. The disease can eventually cause severe gum recession, loose teeth and infections. You might even have areas of bone loss around the jaw because of the disease eventually reaching the underlying bone. Treatment is necessary to prevent further progression of the disease and the pain and problems that go along with it.
Who is a candidate for Gum Osseous Surgery?
The best way for us to determine if you might need osseous surgery is with an exam and x-rays. This allows us to measure the deep pocketing around each tooth to decipher if surgery is the best option for you. If you have gum disease that is severely advanced, it is important that you come in to have the surgery performed. By doing so, you're protecting your smile and improving the quality of your life.
What happens during Gum Osseous Surgery?
The first step to osseous surgery is to provide you with an anesthetic or sedative of your choice. We will then retract the tissues and clear away the debris deep below the gum's surface. We then remove any infected or diseased tissue in these areas. If necessary, we will perform either a bone grafting or a skin grafting to help build up in these areas. We will smooth out any abnormalities at the roots of the teeth, helping the gums to heal more closely to them. With osseous surgery, the procedure is quick and easier than you might think, not to mention the fact that it's beneficial to your oral health.
